Whenever I think of professor Kichamu Akivaga, I remember the late Okot P’Bitek. I met the duo at Gambogi in a bar owned by prof. Akivaga’s father Kichamu. What a great moment it was full of fun and laughter. RIP prof. Akivaga.

Akivaga, as I knew him, was on the board of Governors of Tigoi Girls school when I was its headmaster (Dec ’78-Aug ’82) – how crazy was that! Mzungu man in mid-20s H/M of Kenyan girls school! I was a complete novice but the Board had wonderful supportive people like Akivaga, and Hezron Janira who died recently. At the end of my first term I was bemused, exhausted, somewhat bereft because suddenly all those super pupils had gone home and staff were relaxing. Akivaga arrived unannounced with Phyllis and took me off to Kisumu for the day. It was, as you see, a memorable day. He taught me the importance of the song and dance entertainment at harambee meetings. With my very poor Luhya, one song sounded the same as the next. He explained how they acted as one of the few ways people had to express their opinions directly to those in authority – in the way a court jester can say things to monarchs that might get him jailed, but for the joking metaphor and comic’s costume. Poleni sana Phyllis na watoto wrote.
    Asante mno, mno Akivaga.
